Bittium’s tactical communications system enhances 6G Test Centre as NATO DIANA facility

Bittium has donated its tactical communications system based on software-defined radio to the 6G Test Centre at the University of Oulu. The equipment adds advanced tactical communications capabilities to the Centre’s infrastructure. As part of NATO’s DIANA network and Finland’s 6G Flagship programme, the 6G Test Centre serves as an engine for innovation, enabling dual-use solutions that meet both civilian and defence needs. Bittium’s communications system allows the Centre to integrate secure tactical communications into its hybrid testbeds, where commercial 5G, satellite systems, and future 6G solutions converge. This gives emerging startups and major players hands-on access to military-grade software-defined radio system in combination with commercial networks, enabling interoperability trials, resilience assessments, and secure mobility testing under demanding real-world conditions.

“Bittium’s system strengthens the 6G Test Centre’s role as a world-class environment for testing and validating future networks. With this tactical communications system, we can provide more advanced evaluation of hybrid communications, where commercial 5G, tactical systems, and satellite links must work seamlessly together. It enables us to support users in real-world trials — in the lab, in the field, in Arctic conditions, and even underground,” says Hannu Nikurautio, Research Director of the 6G Test Centre.

“By providing our top-of-the-line tactical communications technology, we’re enabling innovators to test new concepts directly in combination with commercial 5G and satellite systems. Working with the University of Oulu’s 6G Test Centre, a NATO DIANA facility, helps ensure that both secure tactical and civilian communications can evolve side by side in practical testing environments,” says Tommi Kangas, Senior Vice President, Defense & Security Business Segment, Bittium.
